Parent Coaching

What is parent coaching?

Parent coaching is one-on-one time with your child’s OT. We might be experts in occupations, but parents are the experts in their child and family. As such, parent coaching provides support to caregivers and ensures that all treatment and recommendations will actually help the whole family.

When does a family need parent coaching?

We believe that parents/caregivers play a vital role in therapy and encourage all parents to engage in some amount of parent coaching while their child is receiving OT.

How does OT support parents through parent coaching?

Parent coaching can be provided in person, virtually or on the phone. During this time parents will have the opportunity to:

  • Speak candidly about their concerns in a safe and non-judgemental environment

  • Problem solve with their child’s therapist on ways that parents can help support their goals

  • Be educated on parenting strategies and frameworks to build their own parenting toolbox

  • Learn more about their child’s sensory profile and developmental skills to understand what is underlying their challenging behaviours

  • Review strategies the child is learning in OT to help parents use the same language and tools at home
