Self Regulation
What is self regulation?
Self regulation is a person’s ability to adjust and control their reactions, emotions, energy levels, attention and behaviours within the context of the environment. It is strongly influenced by sensory processing and language.
When does a child need self regulation support?
A child would benefit from self regulation support through OT if they struggle with some of the following:
Difficulties understanding and controlling emotions and impulses
Monitoring and managing levels of alertness and attention
Managing sensory needs
Navigating social situations and problem solving conflicts
How does OT support self regulation?
OTs will address underlying challenges that may be impacting self regulation through direct teaching, skill development, and practice in a safe environment. Through OT a child will:
Learn how to recognize and identify their feelings and energy levels
Develop a toolbox of strategies to manage their emotions
Learn to be a flexible thinking and effective problem solver
Learn how to organize and use sensory information appropriately
Parents are encouraged to be involved in OT sessions in order to learn tools and language to help with co-regulation.
